Hydrochloric Acid (1M)
Overview
Uses
Titrating pH, destruction of RNAse on glass slides
Components
- \(diH_2O\)
- 37% \(HCl\) (Sigma-Aldrich)
- Sterile container
Protocol: Preparation of 500mL 1M (1N) HCl
- In a vented hood, add \(100\ mL\) of \(diH_2O\) to a beaker with a stir bar
- Add \(37 g\ HCl\) to the beaker and mix thoroughly to make \(37\%\ HCl\) (\(12.18\ M\ HCl\))
- Add \(41.05\ mL\) of \(37\%\ HCl\) to the beaker
- Dilute to a total of \(500\ mL\) with \(diH_2O\)
- Transfer into a glass container that seals adequately
Calculation
\[ \frac{37\ g\ HCl}{100\ mL} x \frac{1.2\ g}{mL} x \frac{1\ mol\ HCl}{36.46\ g} x \frac{1000\ mL}{1 \ L} = 12.18\ M\ HCl \]
\[ (12.18\ M\ HCl)(500\ mL) = (1\ M\ HCl)(41.05\ mL) \]
Storage
- Store in an appropriate corrosive reagent storage
